Drugs leaflet to help parents

Police are worried by an increase in heroin and crack use
Parents in Plymouth are the target of a new campaign aimed at raising awareness of teenage drug abuse.

Every home in the city is to receive a leaflet giving advice on what to look for and numbers to call if parents think their child is taking drugs.

The leaflet, entitled Do Your Children Know More About Drugs Than You Do? is being delivered from Monday onwards.

It contains information on different types of drugs, from ecstasy and LSD to cannabis and magic mushrooms.

A recent report showed teenagers from the UK are more likely than most of their European counterparts to have taken drugs.

Organisers Plymouth Drug Action Team hope the scheme will help to change that situation.

The National Drugs Helpline said: "Talking to a child about drugs strikes right at the heart of being a good parent.

"Young people take drugs for all sorts of reasons. And above all, it's their choice to take drugs.

"You can't make those choices for them - but you can keep the channels of communication open."
