The Harbour Centre in Plymouth has received �60,000 to pay for a three-year project which takes the anti-drugs message into pubs and clubs.

The money comes from �433,000 confiscated by Devon and Cornwall Police under new laws.

The force's first major seizure was �94,000, taken under the Proceeds of Crime Act from Plymouth drug dealer Robert Stoneman, convicted at Truro Crown Court in March.

Tony Pattinson, manager at the Harbour Centre, said: "It's quite poetic in a way. A lot of money was apparently coming out of the clubs, so it is good to see it going back.

"Up until now we didn't get any money for prevention, we just get money for treatment.

"So this was a good chance to train some young people to do peer education and inform young people of the risks before they get into problems."

Under the Proceeds of Crime Act police and customs officers can search people suspected of carrying a large sum of cash (�10,000 minimum) derived from or intended for use in crime.

Police can also search premises if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that there is cash on the premises, which can be seized.
