Fly-tippers can be fined up to 20,000 |
A new mobile CCTV camera is being used in Plymouth to crackdown on fly-tipping. It comes in response to estimates that there has been a 10% to 20% increase in the illegal dumping of rubbish in Devon.
Plymouth City Council is deploying a small mobile camera to fly-tipping hotspots in a bid to catch illegal dumpers.
The council is warning people it will take action against the culprits it catches and fine them when possible.
Treated seriously
The problem costs the county about 100,000 every year to deal with.
The use of the new camera is a similar system to one which is being used on Dartmoor.
Les Netherton, head of Environmental Regulation at Plymouth City Council, said the problem is being treated very seriously.
He said: "People should be quite clear that if we get evidence then we or the Environment Agency will take action against them and fines can go up to 20,000.
"This is a serious business."
One man has recently been prosecuted for fly-tipping outside the city's Weston Mill tip.
