Extra powers to break up groups
Police in Alvaston and Chellaston in Derby have been given extra powers to help them deal with groups of badly behaved people.

Dispersal orders, which have already been used in other parts of the county, allow officers to move people on.

Anyone who fails to comply with the request could be arrested.

Posters will be put up around the areas warning people of the new powers, which could see those convicted go to prison or face a fine up to 2,500.

'Significant tool'

The additional powers have been granted under Section 30 of the Police Reform Act.

Insp Adrian Gascoyne said: "It allows police to move people on if officers believe that their presence is resulting in, or likely to result in, members of the community being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed.

"The powers are a significant tool in our fight against the nuisance and anti-social behaviour that reduced the quality of life for people in the community.

"This new act enhances and increases existing powers and can tackle the concerns of a cross section of the community."
