Pair escape from lightning strike
Melvyn Potter's house
Fire crews were called to the property
A Derby man says he feels lucky to be alive after a lightning strike hit his home during Tuesday night's storms.

Melvyn Potter said the moment the bolt struck the property in Chaddesden was like a "bomb" going off.

He and his mother escaped unhurt from the house, which suffered serious damage. Fire crews were also called.

The pair are now staying with neighbours. Mr Potter said: "Something just went bang, like I was in Iraq. It was just like a bomb."

House insured

He added: "All of a sudden everything just fell down behind me.

"I didn't know what to do.

"I do feel lucky that I am alive. The house can be re-done up. It is lucky I was insured."

Hundreds of homes across the region were left without power after Tuesday night's storms.
