City area laments 'scruffy' image
Traders in part of Derby are demanding improvements to their shopping area - because it looks scruffy since a neighbouring suburb was done up.

The Alvaston Traders Unite group wants the city council to pay for better lighting, parking, pavements and CCTV.

Campaigners say the improvements at Allenton have made Alvaston look shabby by comparison.

Businesses said they feared they could lose valuable trade at a time when customers were at a premium.

Nick Neolcleous, who runs an Alvaston fish and chip shop, said: "If I go back to when I was a child, Alvaston was booming and Allenton was behind.

"Now that has reversed because of all the money pumped into Allenton. It is now more appealing to the eye, the parking has improved and the cctv gives people peace of mind."
