Derby will hold its first gay pride event in May |
A gay pride event will take place in Derby for the first time in May. The one-day event on 14 May at the city's Market Place will include entertainers, dancers and various information stalls.
Organiser Adrian Piggott said he hopes the event will raise awareness of the area's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
He said: "It is a very important stage that we have reached, where we have come together as a community."
"There are various agencies such as a youth group and an awareness-raising group, ourselves as a support agency, and our partners - such as the police - who feel it is time for us to be much more visible within the local community," he said.
Large cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Brighton, annually hold a gay pride event, normally over a bank holiday weekend, to highlight their gay communities.
