Helicopters checking power supply
Helicopters have taken to the skies to check for problems on electricity cables across the East Midlands.

Central Networks, will be inspecting the overhead power lines in Derbyshire as part of a regional inspection.

The airborne patrols are aiming to spot potential hazards but also to highlight sections where improvement work could be necessary.

Checks are weather dependent with plans to examine lines in Long Eaton, Heanor, Matlock and Bakewell.

Alan Raymant from Central Networks said: "With so much overhead cabling - around 23,000 kilometres in the East Midlands alone - taking a helicopter up is the best way to check out a lot of our cables.

"It's vital we do that because we could find there are problems with our poles or lines we weren't aware of, or there are trees growing into overhead lines or even buildings have been built too close to the lines.

"In previous years, we've found some runaway cows for local farmers, which wasn't why we were up there but it did help us to be a good neighbour."
