National award for community farm
A derelict piece of land which was transformed into a community farm and education centre has scooped a prestigious national award.

Willow Tree Family Farm in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, has been named as a 2005 Green Pennant Award winner.

The scheme, now in its third year, is run by the Civic Trust and is exclusively for green spaces managed by voluntary and community groups.

Willow Tree Farm, which was opened in 2003, is also open to the public.

Education centre

The farm is home to a range of animals and birds including some birds of prey, ducks, chickens, pigs, sheep, horses, rabbits and guinea pigs.

It also has a cafe, shop and classrooms and has the support of a number of local businesses.

It is one of only 27 community green spaces across the country that have been rewarded with the Green Pennant.

The project is also supported by Derbyshire County Council's community economic development team.
