Museum gardens scoop 'park' award
Horniman Gardens
Horniman Gardens has retained its Green Flag status for 2005
A south London garden with 16 acres of landscaped green space has been named the best park in the South East.

Horniman Gardens in Forest Hill was among nine regional winners across the country to be voted one of Britain's best parks.

Horticultural experts judged parks on public access, design, their role in the community and maintenance.

The gardens are attached to Horniman Museum which holds collections of musical instruments and coral reef.

Gardens manager Gordon Lucas said the award would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of all those involved.

He added: "We have been absolutely delighted by the recognition the gardens have received this year so it is a great privilege to be voted Britain's best park in the South East."

Bryan Peachey, a manager of awards sponsors Briggs and Stratton UK, said the gardens epitomised values of maintaining green spaces to a high standard and being central to communities.

The gardens have retained their Green Flag status for 2005. It is a national standard for green parks offering free public access.
