Post office managers want to shut almost 20 branches in Derbyshire. Many of the branches earmarked for closure serve small suburban communities and the Post Office says they are not making enough money.
The plans call for 16 of Derby's 43 branches to close plus a further one in the village of Midway.
Residents now have a six-week consultation period to make their views known to Post Office managers before a final decision is taken.
Careful study
The Post Office has been pushing ahead with a programme of branch closures across the country.
But many have argued the move leaves communities without a vital service.
Jane Thomas, from Post Office Limited, denied the closures will leave the elderly and infirm stranded.
She said: "We have looked at the offices and the set-up very carefully.
"We have had people on the ground walking between branches and looking at terrain and the bus network to make sure people will be able to travel to alternative branches.
"I mean, if you actually look at the branches we are proposing to close, many have three alternative branches within a mile."
