Shelter appeals for more blankets
Homeless man
Homeless people can stay the night at the winter shelter
A charity caring for the homeless in Derby says it needs more blankets if it is to cope with the cold weather.

The Padley Centre says the recent cold snap has seen an increase in demand and they have already used up their supply of bedding.

Staff are worried they will not be able to stop people dying on the city's streets this winter.

The charity believes the numbers of people sleeping rough is on the increase.

Beds full

Vicky Schofield, from the Padley Centre, emphasised they did not want a repeat of last year.

She said: "It was only last winter that we had a gentleman die outside our premises overnight from hypothermia.

"People need at least two blankets to keep warm, one to insulate them from the ground and another to cover themselves.

"Obviously at this time of year the spaces in our beds tend to remain full."
