Several sites have been considered for the hostel |
Plans for a homeless hostel in Leicester have been approved despite opposition from local residents. The proposal for the 4m shelter on Conduit Street in the Highfields area still needs final planning approval.
Labour councillor Patrick Kitterick says residents will fight to stop the development.
He says residents at the hostel would be vulnerable to drug-dealing and prostitution in the area.
The plans replace another controversial scheme originally intended for Pocklington's Walk in the city centre.
Mr Kitterick supports the idea of putting the hostel in the city centre location.
More than 200 people attended a public meeting on Wednesday to voice their concerns about the project.
The Conduit Street plans include a GP surgery and counselling service.
