Night shelter looks to future
Homeless man
Homeless people can stay the night at the winter shelter
A night shelter for homeless people says it needs to raise 30,000 to stay open.

The Winter Night Shelter in Derby has been threatened with closure after funding ran out last month.

But charity workers say they want to keep the 12-bed shelter at Glad Tidings Hall on Boyer Street open all year if they can raise the money.

The hostel was opened in December last year, days after the death of a 61-year-old homeless man highlighted the plight of homeless people in the city and the demand for beds.

Larry Shaw was in a doorway just yards from a centre that offers beds and food to the homeless.

Public donations

The coroner ruled he had frozen to death.

The Winter Night Shelter has provided beds for nearly 100 homeless people since it opened.

But the future of the centre looked uncertain when funding ran out at the end of last month.

Donations have come in from the public, local businesses and the church to keep it open for the moment.

However, an extra 30,000 is needed to keep the shelter open until the end of the year.
