Woman falls 200ft from Helvellyn

Helvellyn
The woman was the third person to fall from Striding Edge on Friday

A woman sustained serious injuries after falling more than 200ft from England's third highest mountain.

The 47-year-old, from Nottingham, was walking on Helvellyn in the Lakes when she fell from the Striding Edge ridge.

She was airlifted to hospital by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer, suffering from head and spinal injuries.

It follows an earlier incident on Striding Edge, when a couple from Ellesmere Port fell from the ridge, sustaining wrist and rib injuries.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue team was assisted in both rescues by colleagues from Penrith.
