 The walker fell from Striding Edge on Helvellyn |
An 80-year old man from Cumbria was killed when he fell from a ridge on one of England's highest mountains. Sydney Ambrose-Smith, from Threlkeld, was walking alone on Helvellyn when he fell about 300ft (91.4m) from Striding Edge. Patterdale Mountain Rescue team and an RAF helicopter were called and airlifted him from the mountain. He was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary but was pronounced dead on arrival. The coroner has been informed.
