The 17-year-old was with friends at Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale when she was injured.

Her cries for help were heard and the Langdale Ambleside mountain rescue team risked falling rocks to help.

The girl was airlifted by an RAF helicopter to Furness General Hospital where she was treated for a fractured skull and hand and arm injuries.

Helicopter rescue

A spokesman for the rescue team said: "Shouts for help were reported from the valley below, and the alarm was raised.

"The team found her badly injured and in a precarious position.

"She was treated with spinal immobilisation and oxygen and evacuated by helicopter.

"We had intended to move her to a safer position for winching, but her condition deteriorated and she was lifted immediately, despite the significant risk of further rock fall."
