City's future priorities set out
Carlisle city centre
The project will involve regeneration over the next decade
Improving public transport and setting up a theatre are among the top priorities for residents for the future of Carlisle.

A snapshot of responses to the Carlisle Renaissance consultation project was outlined at a state of the city event this week.

It was set up in the aftermath of the floods which struck the city in 2005 to regenerate it over the next 10 years.

A feasibility study into a theatre or arts centre has now been commissioned.

Other findings included that 84% of people who replied to the consultation agreed the Rickergate area should be developed as an area of opportunity and 91% felt the same for the Botchergate South of the city.

Carlisle City Council leader Councillor Mike Mitchelson said: "We have been really pleased with the response to the consultation and we've received some very positive and constructive feedback from local residents and businesses.

"Their views are essential to the development of Carlisle over the next decade.

"One of the most positive issues arising from the consultation has been residents' views of their city and a staggering 95% said that they enjoy living in the Carlisle area and want to continue living here."
