Hearse poster warns drink drivers

The poster campaign is aimed at drink drivers
A stark poster campaign featuring a hearse is launched in Cumbria to tackle a 35% rise in drink-driving.

Every year about 450 people are killed or seriously injured on the county's roads and every weekend an average of 15 people are caught drink-driving.

To tackle the problem, Cumbria Police is launching a new hard-hitting poster campaign warning of the dangers.

The posters show a hearse, taxi, ambulance and police car with the slogan "Who's taking you home tonight?"

High profile checks

Councillor Geoff Hodgson, cabinet spokesman for community safety for Cumbria County Council, said: "If you are going out enjoying yourself over the festive season leave the car at home, get a taxi or arrange for a lift with someone who is not drinking.

"This simple yet effective campaign highlights the alternative methods of transport available to party goers. Let's hope it makes drivers think before getting behind the wheel this year."

Over the next few weeks, police will also be carrying out high profile vehicle and breath checks at roadsides.

Motorists prosecuted for drinking and driving face a 12-month ban, a fine of up to 5,000 and up to six months in prison.
