Drivers could lose their licence if found over the limit

The latest police figures reveal that 170 drivers were arrested in July and August, compared to 111 the previous two months - a rise of almost 35%.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said the reason for the rise was not known, but officers were determined to get tough on offenders.

Those caught over the limit are being warned they face losing their licence or going to prison.

Supt Steve Turnbull, responsible for road safety in the county, said: "We thought people had started to realise, not just the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, but the impact it can have on them.

"They can lose their licence and possibly their job. In extreme cases offenders can face prison.

"We do not just carry out tests at Christmas or during the summer. For us it is a campaign throughout the year.

"The message is if you drink and drive, expect to get caught and face the consequences."
