Police now have the power to seize and destroy mini bikes

The move follows a rise in the number of incidents involving the popular machines in the Kendal area.

Officers have already seized two of the bikes and warned riders found without a valid driving licence, insurance or helmet, they face prosecution.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said the illegal use of the bikes on roads was a growing problem.

Proper documentation

He said: "These machines are not designed for road use and also require the same documentation as larger motorcycles.

"We have adopted a zero tolerance approach to this problem and will prosecute all riders who do not have proper documentation or the correct gear.

"We have already seized two machines and will be looking to seize more."

Police were given powers to seize the machines earlier this year.
