New bylaw cracks down on bikers
Motorcycles and scrambler bikes are to be banned from council land in parts of West Cumbria following complaints from residents and dog walkers.

From 25 June, anyone riding on Maryport Promenade, Harrington Marina or Oldside will face prosecution under the newly-introduced bylaw.

Allerdale Borough Council said it had "a duty" to protect the public from irresponsible riders.

The ban is seen as a last resort, after other measures failed to work.

Fences had been put up, but were torn down, and there was no take-up on a special site offered to bikers.

Jim Musgrave, leader of the council, said: "The police are very good but they can't be there 24 hours a day.

"Because of repeated requests from the public we have got to be seen to be taking some action. You can pussyfoot around but in the end you have to bite the bullet and say, right we are going to sort it out properly."
