Success for Christmas crackdown
Police in Cumbria have hailed a pre-Christmas crackdown on crime and drink driving in the county.

Operation Helm Wind sees a larger than usual police presence to combat alcohol related violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour.

Workington was targeted in the first weekend of the operation, where just four arrests were made.

In a separate move to combat festive drink driving, a series of spot checks resulted in seven arrests.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Incidents of disorder were remarkably low, due to the increased presence of officers in the town centre.

Drink driving

"On Friday we just had arrests for minor incidents of disorder.

"Over the next two days there two further arrests.

"We have worked closely with other agencies and door staff to make sure this operation is a success."

The spokesman said a separate crackdown on drink driving in the Allerdale area over the weekend had resulted in seven arrests.

The county-wide operation will continue until 3 January.
