MP joins road safety calls
Tim Collins
Tim Collins has called for a 'safer and greener' A590
The Shadow Transport Secretary has added his voice to calls for the A590 east of Ulverston to be made safer.

Tim Collins, who is also MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, wants the government to prioritise improvements to the road.

Three teenagers died on the Bouth Lane End to Greenodd stretch earlier this year.

Gareth Lewis, 18, and Victoria Clarke, 15, both from Grange-over-Sands were killed along with 19-year-old Anthony Ramsden in the accident in March.

Mr Collins has joined county councillor Ron Mein in calls to make the road - which runs from the M6 motorway to Barrow-in-Furness - safer.

'Full support'

Mr Mein has warned that some young drivers have been treating part of the road like an airport landing strip, and are turning off their headlights at night time.

He said they are able to do this because the cats eyes there are solar powered, and stay alight.

Mr Mein has also unsuccessfully campaigned for a pedestrian crossing at Haverthwaite.

He said: "I am delighted Tim has decided to come along and give us his full support because he carries far more weight than a county councillor.

"He is coming on Thursday to look at the situation first hand and I know when he gets his teeth into it he will, like me, stay there until we get a result."
