| Monday, 10 February, 2003, 07:37 GMT Safety measures for Kendal road ![]() There have been seven accidents on the road Vehicles turning across the A590 from side roads south of Kendal in Cumbria, will be stopped from doing so from Monday after a string of accidents. The Highways Agency is spending 30,000 putting up new road signs and closing some of the central reservation gaps near Levens in the county. There have been seven accidents - one of them fatal - on this part of the A590 in the last three years. Three of the accidents were a direct result of vehicles leaving side roads. Lane closures Now it has been made an offence to turn right across traffic from side roads near the Brettargh Holt roundabout, or to do a u-turn anywhere on the stretch through to Low Newton. It will take three weeks to implement the changes, which involve putting up new road signs and closing some of the gaps in the central reservation. There will be lane closures and a 40-miles-an hour limit whilst the work is carried out. The Highways Agency said some journeys may be made slightly longer, but hopes that safety will improve. | See also: 17 Jan 03 | UK 13 Jun 02 | UK 30 Jan 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
