In total 2,300 jobs will go if the plant closes

Protests were held at car dealerships across the West Midlands as part of a campaign by unions to get people to boycott Peugeot models.

The Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus have funded a �1m advertising campaign against the plan.

The firm said in April it was to close the plant with the loss of 2,300 jobs.

Amicus regional secretary Terry Pye said: "We need to make the general public aware of what is happening to loyal and productive UK workers so they can make an informed decision.

'Consider alternatives'

"They need to think about whether they want to buy goods that are made in the UK and so support UK manufacturing or support companies whose only loyalty is to make a fast buck. It could be their jobs next.

"We are also sending a message to other manufacturers who may be considering sending jobs abroad that we will make every effort to affect their sales and reputation."

Jim O'Boyle, TGWU convenor at the Ryton plant, added: "We're reminding Peugeot Citroen that sales in the UK will be hit if the company abandons Coventry and the UK.

"Our action also touches the conscience of the car-buying public, and we ask people to consider alternatives when choosing a new car."
