The River Valency will be widened under the proposals |
Revised plans have been submitted for a bridge in a Cornish village that was flooded when a river burst its banks nearly three years ago. The River Valency in Boscastle caused damage valued at millions of pounds when it burst its banks in August 2004.
Replacing the 19th Century Lower Bridge is part of a flood relief scheme being considered by district councillors.
The Environment Agency put in new proposals after complaints the original design was too modern and large.
The plan is to replace the Lower Bridge near the harbour with a larger bridge further downstream.
Local materials
The original design for Lower Bridge used concrete and stainless steel.
It had the approval of the National Trust but protestors said the structure was not in keeping with the harbour.
A spokesman for the agency said they had taken into consideration the views of villagers who wanted local materials featured in the plans and had now simplified the design.
The agency also wants to move the village car park and realign the river channel upstream. It said this should reduce the risk of flooding to one in 75 years.
In 2004, many homes and businesses were destroyed and cars swept out to sea when about 440 million gallons of water swept through the village.
