A Boeing 737 jet has been named after the Radio One DJ

On Thursday, Newquay Airport said it would hold a meeting to decide if it should name itself after Jo Whiley.

And the airport, which is owned by Cornwall County Council, said it would ask local residents if they were in favour of the change.

Blackpool International Airport has already announced it has named a Boeing 737 jet after the Radio One star.

Cornwall County Council said Adam Payner from its Environment and Heritage Department would make a bid for Newquay Cornwall Airport to be considered for her name to be used.

Proposals were given to Blackpool Airport to use her name, but the airport said it had "too big a name" to change its title. It said it had renamed the 737 after her instead.

A Cornwall County Council spokesman said: "Jo Whiley says she has flown into Newquay many times, loves the beaches in the area, especially Watergate Bay, and she is proud to have two airports fighting over her name."

A poll on the council's website shows that 84% of voters believe that Newquay Airport should be renamed.

The council is in a race against time to raise �21m to upgrade Newquay Airport when the RAF pulls out of St Mawgan next year. It will have to provide air traffic control, radar and firefighters in order to keep its licence.

It introduced a �5 departure tax last year to help stem losses of �1m a year, but has warned that the airport may not break even until it attracts more than 600,000 passengers a year - about double its current number.

Paul Whelan, the group executive chairman of City Hopper Airports which owns Blackpool and Wolverhampton, has said they are interested in a partnership with Cornwall.
