RAF St Mawgan is due to be mothballed in 2007 |
Conservatives on Cornwall County Council are calling on the leader David Whalley to resign over his handling of the RAF St Mawgan airbase at Newquay. Restormel borough councillor Mark Formosa and his Conservative colleagues are blaming the Liberal Democrat-run county council for the base's loss.
The Defence Minister, Adam Ingram, last week said the Joint Combat Aircraft (JCA) would not be stationed there.
Mr Whalley was unavailable on Monday to answer questions about the airbase.
Conservative councillors say Mr Whalley sent the wrong message to the government about bringing the JCA to the airbase by raising negative issues such as excess noise.
The RAF is now due to leave the airbase in 2007 throwing the future of Newquay Airport further into doubt.
