Work begins to demolish car park
Bulldozer
Revamp plans have been discussed for more than six years
The demolition of a car park that has caused long delays for one of Cornwall's biggest regeneration projects was starting on Monday.

Contractors were moving into the multi-storey in St Austell to prepare for the demolition crew.

Delays were caused when Tesco objected to the demolition in a dispute over access rights to the roof of its town centre store.

The work is part of a 40m town revamp that was first discussed in 1999.

The multi-storey car park is due to be replaced by 90 car park spaces by Christmas.

But contracts have to be agreed with two landowners in the town centre before the 40m regeneration can begin.

Gareth Pinwell, the assistant chief executive of Restormel Borough Council, said: "Once those contracts are secure I would imagine the developer will be keen to get on site and make a physical start which will be a clear demonstration to the people of St Austell that the town is to be regenerated."
