Kite surfer smashes world record
Andreya Wharry
Andreya Wharry already holds the women's kite surf record
A female kite surfer from Newquay is celebrating beating the world kite-surfing distance record.

Andreya Wharry, 33, completed the 135-mile journey from Cornwall's Watergate Bay to the Republic of Ireland.

The former Gladiators champion left the UK on Wednesday after a brief delay caused by a lack of wind.

She was forced to ditch a previous bid last weekend after two hours because of bad weather.

The current continuous kite surfing record of 110 miles is held by the American Marcus "Flash" Austin.

Ms Wharry already holds the women's kite surf record - last May she completed the 70-mile passage from the Isles of Scilly to Watergate Bay.

'Amazing reception'

After arriving in Dungarvan, Ms Wharry spoke of her delight at the "amazing" reception she was given by her Irish supporters.

She said: "It's fantastic. It's marred a little bit by the fact that I couldn't make the last three miles to the beach.

"But I was overpowered, I just physically couldn't hold the kite any more."

Ms Wharry said she planned to settle down to organising her wedding next month before worrying about her next challenge.

But she added: "Then I've got the long, cold winter to come up with ideas."
