Andreya Wharry already holds the women's kite surf record |
A Cornish woman has had to abandon her first attempt to set a new world record for the longest continuous kite surf. Former Gladiators champion Andreya Wharry, 34, set out from Watergate Bay, near Newquay, on the 135-mile crossing to County Waterford on Saturday.
But after less than two hours she was forced to call off the challenge after winds repeatedly blew her off course.
She now has until 10 September to find another suitable "weather window" to attempt the record-breaking crossing.
'Too late'
A spokeswoman for the record attempt said: "She was having to tack to keep on course, and using up miles and daylight.
"Looking forward into the afternoon the wind veered more in the direction she wanted, but it would be too late by then.
"It had to be perfect when she set off. She came in now so she would be fresh and can have another go tomorrow if it's good."
Ms Wharry already holds the women's kite surf record; last May she completed the 70-mile passage from the Isles of Scilly to Watergate Bay.
The current continuous kite surfing record of 110 miles is held by the American Marcus "Flash" Austin.
