Kite surfer to challenge record
Kite surfing record breakers

Cornish kite surfer, former Gladiators champion Andreya Wharry, is aiming to beat the world record for the longest continuous kite surf.

She will attempt to cross the Irish Sea from Watergate Bay in Cornwall to Ireland - a distance of 135 miles.

The record of 110 miles is held by US kite surfer Marcus "Flash" Austin.

Ms Wharry, 33, from Newquay, already holds the women's record for the 70-mile passage from Scilly Isles to Watergate Bay in May last year.

'Biggest challenge'

Ms Wharry, who sailed with two other women for her record in May, said: "This is going to be a lot harder but I am pretty hopeful that it is going to be successful.

"I know what it is about now, I am going to change a few bits of equipment and I will be training hard. I cannot wait to get started."

She has chosen a three week period from 20 August to 10 September for her challenge.

With a fair wind, she expects to arrive at the Rosslare Peninsula in south-east Ireland about 10 hours after launch.

She said: "I think the biggest challenge will be keeping the motivation to continue - it's not so much a physical barrier as a mental barrier."
