MP upbeat on Tesco store impasse
Tesco store front
Tesco rejects accusations of stalling the sale
MP Matthew Taylor says he is optimistic redevelopment of St Austell town centre can go ahead.

The revamp has been held up by Tesco's objections to the demolition of a multi-storey shop in St Austell.

Restormel District Council has warned that it will force Tesco to sell if it has to.

Liberal Democrat MP Mr Taylor met Tesco bosses in London on Tuesday to discuss the redevelopment and he was pleased by the results.

He said: "I am very hopeful that we can get a resolution in the next few weeks on the demolition of the multi-storey.

"It will be the first piece in the jigsaw of getting the town centre redevelopment started this year."

Tesco, which is facing council objections to plans for an extension to its out-of-town site, has denied claims by the MP that it is holding the town to ransom, and says that it is just putting business first.
