MP tackles Tesco on store impasse
Tesco store front
Tesco rejects accusations of stalling the sale
Liberal Democrat MP Matthew Taylor is meeting with Tesco on Tuesday because he says they are holding up the 40m redevelopment of St Austell.

Mr Taylor accused Tesco of holding the town to ransom by refusing to sell its town centre store until it is allowed to expand its superstore outside town.

But the supermarket chain has denied the charge, saying it is just putting its business first.

Restormel Council has warned that it will force Tesco to sell if it has to.

Tesco wants an extension at its site at Daniels Lane at Holmbush, along with new roads, a larger car park and landscaping.

But council officials are worried this would interfere with plans to attract a large retailer to the town centre.
