Motorcyclists make up just 1% of traffic on roads

Cornwall County Council's "Strategy for Powered Two Wheelers" sets out how the council thinks that motorcycling can be made safer.

It said there were more motorcycles per head of population in the South West than anywhere else in the country.

It added that nearly 300 were injured and eight people died in motorbike crashes in 2003.

Officers from the council's Planning, Transportation and Estates Department have been working with motorcyclists and specialist consultants to come up with the strategy.

It makes a number of recommendations about road safety, including the need for more training, getting motorcyclists access to bus lanes and giving them stop lines in front of other vehicles at traffic lights.
