Cameras looking for racing bikers

The Bank Holiday is one of the busiest weekends on the roads
Mobile speed camera units will be out in force across Devon and Cornwall over the Bank Holiday weekend.

They are specifically targeting motorcyclists who are going too fast.

The Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership will be deploying all its mobile units to known motorcycle speeding hotspots in both counties.

Motorcyclists make up just 1% of traffic on roads but account for about 14% of deaths and serious injuries in crashes.

While they are working, their use will be continued

In Cornwall alone, 10 bikers have been killed in 2004 already, compared to eight for the whole of 2003.

The August Bank Holiday is always one of the busiest weekends on the roads in Devon and Cornwall, and road safety advisors say it is a time when motorcyclists tend to travel in greater numbers and some travel at excessive speed.

Gwyn Hughes, operations manager for the Safety Camera Partnership, said: "Speed cameras are definitely a useful tool in reducing injury collision.

"They are only part of the armoury open to the Highways Agency and police to achieve that goal of reducing casualties. But while they are working, their use will be continued."

Motorcyclists are welcoming the attempts to reduce motorcycle fatalities on the county's roads.

However, Mike Baker, regional representative of the Motorcycle Action Group, said bikers should not be used as scapegoats for any increase in accidents.

He said: "The rise in casualties is not as great as the increase in the number of bikes on the road and bikers are better trained now than they were in the past.

"But there's always room for improvement for the scope of their training."

Thousands of bikers are expected to attend the South West Motorcycle Show being held at the Westpoint Arena, near Exeter on Saturday and Sunday.

The Highways Agency is also advising motorists to stagger their journeys by avoiding busy lunchtime congestion periods during the weekend.
