 A wave-generating machine creates the surf |
A regeneration company is hoping to create an extreme sports centre in a former tin mining area of Cornwall.
Indoor surfing and skateboarding are just some of the sports envisaged by Camborne, Pool and Redruth Regeneration working in partnership with the Carn Brea Leisure Centre.
The Flowrider wave-generating machine that is proposed creates surf in enclosed spaces, and would be the first in the UK.
Nigel Smith, interim chief executive of CPR Regeneration, said consultants were working on the proposals to present to supporters for financial backing.
He said the project would cost "tens of millions of pounds" and give a boost to the region which continues to suffer from high unemployment and low incomes.
I have no doubt that something like this would really work here Nigel Smith, CPR Regeneration |
CPR Regeneration has the support of the South West Regional Development Agency, English Partnerships, local authorities, the Prince's Foundation and local businesses.
Mr Smith said: "They are very ambitious plans, but the area, which has not had its fair share of anything, deserves something good.
"I have no doubt that something like this would really work here.
"The big question is, can we get the money?
"We are a priority spending area for the RDA and English Partnerships and I hope they will support this because it is a really good thing for Cornwall."
The consultants' study is expected to be finished by August.
