The Other Boleyn Girl, a BBC Films Production, is about the power struggles, rivalries and strained loyalty between Anne and Mary Boleyn. The film has been developed for the big screen by BBC Films after the success of the TV film of the same name, which was shown in 2003.
Johansson plays Mary opposite Portman as Anne, and Eric Bana stars as Henry VIII.
In the film Mary and her younger sister Anne compete for the affections of Henry VIII.
The cathedral was also used as a location for Victoria The Golden Age |
Sallyann Ford, events and visitors manager for the cathedral, said: "Hollywood heading to Ely is great news for the city. It is a very exciting project.
"The film was completed at Dover castle and other locations in Kent but the directors felt some of the scenes needed bulking out so they are coming to Ely Cathedral to add a final gloss to the film.
"All of the Hollywood actors starring in the film will be here so it will bring a lot of life and revenue to a small city.
Cate Blanchett
"The film has been tipped for an Oscar."
The 11th Century cathedral, called the "Ship of the Fens" because it is surrounded by water and dominates the skyline, has previously been used as a location for filming for Elizabeth: The Golden Age starring Australian actress Cate Blanchett.
The Hollywood actor also filmed scenes in Cambridge on the River Cam near St John's College for the sequel to the Oscar-nominated film Elizabeth.
Mrs Ford told BBC News that preparations for filming will begin on Monday but the cathedral will remain open to the public until 28 August.
All daily cathedral services will be taking place although the location, and occasionally the times, may vary. A list of Cathedral services for the duration of the filming will be distributed at a later date.
The Other Boleyn Girl is due to be released in February next year.
BBC Films Productions was unavailable for comment.
