A school has broken with a 1,000-year tradition and formed its first ever girls' choir. The newly-formed Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir, which features girls aged 13 to 18, will sing their first Evensong at the cathedral on Wednesday.
Like their male counterparts, the girls are educated at the King's School, Ely.
School head Sue Freestone said: "At last, young women are playing a full and equal part in providing music for worship in Ely Cathedral."
The Ely Cathedral Choir consists of boys aged between nine and 13 and dates back to the 11th century.
King's announced plans to form the girls' choir a year ago, after opening its doors to girl pupils in 1970.
The new choir will be an addition to the cathedral where 22 boy choristers and six lay singers take part in established services including Eucharist, Evensong and daily prayer.
