It is thought Cambridgeshire has a large number of travellers |
A land swap proposal is being considered to resolve a dispute over a controversial travellers' site in Cambridgeshire. The Gypsy Council and Cottenham Residents Association plan to offer travellers land in another part of the county as part of the scheme.
The association hopes the plan will reduce the concentration of travellers within the village.
But some councillors fear the plan will just move the problem elsewhere.
The proposals were discussed by Cottenham Residents Association at a meeting on Monday.
In March, hundreds of Cottenham residents said they would refuse to pay their council tax if the size of the site at Smithy Fen - on the edge of Cottenham - is not reduced.
South Cambridgeshire District Council has since refused permission for 18 new plots on the site and the travellers are appealing against the decision. The inquiry is adjourned until November.
A travellers' site has existed near Cottenham for 40 years.
