 Traveller families have lived at Smithy Fen for 40 years |
About 200 people have met councillors and police to protest against the expansion of a travellers site in Cambridgeshire. Police told the meeting in Cottenham fewer than one in six crimes in the area is linked to the Smithy Fen site.
Council representatives promised planning laws would be enforced.
In March, hundreds of Cottenham residents said they would refuse to pay council tax if the site at Smithy Fen had not been curbed.
A travellers' site has existed near Cottenham for 40 years.
Next week travellers plan to appeal over South Cambrigeshire District Council's refusal to allow the expansion of some plots.
Councillor Deborah Roberts said after the meeting: "This is not an easy situation legally. There are a lot of sides to it that we have to follow as a council.
"We are confined by rules and regulations ourselves but what I want to tell local people is that we will go away next week and do the best possible for you."
