Closure threat for nine post offices
Nine post offices in Peterborough and the Fens are under threat of closure as part of cost-cutting plans.

Royal Mail said branches in Peterborough, Wisbech and March could close.

It claims they are needed because too many post offices are competing for too few customers.

A spokesman for the Post Office said if the planned closures went ahead it was estimated that 95% of people in the areas would still live within a mile of their nearest branch.

Stanground, Peterborough

Residents have until 30 December to comment on the plans.

Manager of Postwatch East of England, Linda McCord, said it was essential for people to make their case for their local post office if they wanted the service to continue.

"It's not a foregone conclusion that they will close and that's why there is an organisation like Postwatch," she said.

"We have been successful elsewhere in the region and across the country in opposing closures, saying 'No, this is not the correct post office to close'."

Anyone who wants to comment on the proposals can write to the National Consultation Team, PO Box 2060, Watford, WD18 8ZW.
