Inspectors aim to reduce accidents on farms |
Inspectors are to visit farms in the Huntingdon area this month to check safety standards. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be visiting agricultural sites in the area from 21 July.
Simon Longbottom, HSE Principal Inspector for Agriculture for the region, said: "Some of the visits will be by appointment, and some will be unannounced.
"We will be talking to farmers about the health and safety issues that affect them, giving advice and using enforcement procedures where necessary."
The HSE said more than 41 people died in farm accidents across England from April to 2001 to April 2002.
A 22-year-old employee who fell from an unsecured ladder after repairing the roof of a trailer in Barway near Ely was one of them.
As he stepped onto the ladder to climb down from the trailer roof, it slipped and he fell to the concrete floor below, sustaining fatal head injuries.
Inspectors will pay particular attention to potential falls from height, workplace transport, manual handling such as lifting and carrying, and slips and trips.
Mr Longbottom said: "Agriculture continues to be one of the most dangerous industries to work in, despite the fact that most incidents causing injury on farms are preventable."
