Residents can buy a green wheelie bin and pay for collections

The new brown kitchen bin will be collected on the same day black boxes are emptied. Black wheelie bins will then be emptied fortnightly.

The system has been operating in part of the city since June.

In the first phase, households missed by the food waste collection complained food was left rotting in the streets.

Around 120,000 homes will start the new system for waste collection on Tuesday 8 August.

Garden waste

"The city-wide launch of the new waste collection services is a landmark event in the way Bristol deals with waste," said Councillor Gary Hopkins.

"Even with just one-fifth of the city covered by the new collections we have seen levels of recycling rocket in the city while the amount of waste going to landfill has significantly reduced."

The pilot scheme has seen recycling rates in Monday collection areas go up from 17% to 40%.

At the same time the percentage of rubbish going to landfill in these areas plummeted by around 20%, according to figures from Bristol City Council.

Residents can also choose to pay for a green wheelie bin and weekly garden waste collection service.
