Post-code plea follows bin thefts
An increase in thefts of wheelie bins in the South Somerset district has led to a call for residents to mark them with their house number and post code.

Last Wednesday, a trail of bins was strewn across a street in the village of Stoke-sub-Hamdon.

A bin was also thrown on to the A303, landing in the fast lane of the dual carriageway and risking an accident.

A council spokeswoman said marking wheelie bins would enable them to be returned to owners more quickly.

Out-of-hours

"We hold records that match the bins to properties, but this kind of behaviour happens mainly at night when our offices are not staffed," said Waste Management Officer Beth Prince.

"So labelling your bins with house number and post code would help the police return them quicker."

Pc Brett Gitsham, Crime Reduction Officer for Yeovil, added: "We have seen an increase in reports regarding the theft of wheelie bins and we are working closely with [the district council] to address this problem.

"We would also encourage local residents to try to secure the bins where possible, this can be simply achieved with something like a bicycle lock."
