Alan Pemberton shot his son, William, and wife Julia |
The last words of a mother-of-two shot dead by her estranged husband, who also killed their son before shooting himself, were heard at an inquest. The hearing heard 47-year-old Julia Pemberton tell a police operator she had "about one minute before I die" as she hid in a cupboard.
In a 16-minute phone call, she described how her husband, Alan, 48, was getting closer and closer.
He shot her and their 16-year-old son at their home in Hermitage, Berkshire.
Family wept
Tuesday's inquest in Reading heard the transcript of Mrs Pemberton's phone call read out by Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford.
She pleaded with the operator to send help before hiding, saying: "I've got about one minute before I die, please."
As the operator reassured her that the police were on their way, she said: "Here he comes, oh here he comes, oh my God, he's come."
Her final words were: "He's coming now."
The transcript then recorded the sound of a door opening and a man's voice, after which she cried out and the line went dead.
'Callous' act
The inquest at Reading Civic Centre heard that Mr Pemberton had recently moved in with his new partner, Penny Cook, in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
Mrs Cook told the court how, after his death, she had found a farewell letter warning that he was to carry out a "callous" act and speaking of his "overpowering" need for revenge.
Mrs Cook said he also described himself as obsessed about the fact that his wife had accused him of sexual abuse, as well as his sense of separation from his children.
The hearing continues on Wednesday.
