Council planning to axe more jobs

Peterborough City Council is to target street wardens and library workers as it aims to cut 150 more jobs.

About 250 posts have been lost through voluntary redundancy and natural staff turnover since the council announced in February that 400 jobs had to go.

John Peach, the council leader, said they were looking at various ways of shedding staff.

The council said compulsory redundancy was an option but it still wanted volunteers to come forward.

He said: "We asked people to take voluntary redundancy and just over 100 responded and opted for this.

"We've also withdrawn about 60 posts which were due to be advertised.

"As with all big organisations there is a natural level of turnover of people leaving to take another job, retiring or whatever and this has also allowed us to cut numbers."

Peterborough City Council employs more than 6,500 people and manages a budget of more than £217m.
