Plans to axe posts go to council

Plans to axe hundreds of jobs at Peterborough City Council are going before councillors.

The budget, which goes before the council at 1900 GMT, calls for the cutting of up to 400 posts.

Most of the job cuts will be in administration and back office jobs, said the council.

The council said it had lost 4.1m due to the downturn in the economy. But it still plans to keep the increase in council tax at only 2.5%.

It says many of the posts that will be axed are not presently filled.

The council has said its continuing drive to improve services through efficiency savings will improve frontline services.
