The news follows the announcement of 70 job losses at the Ideal World shopping channel

Hundreds of jobs are to be axed at Peterborough City Council and Perkins Engines in Cambridgeshire with both blaming the economic slump.

Up to 400 jobs are to go at the council - 180 this year and the rest in 2009.

Most of the job cuts will be in administration and back office jobs, said a council spokesman.

Meanwhile Perkins Engines, which is based in Peterborough, has announced plans to shed 150 jobs due to a slowdown in the demand for products.

It will mostly affect temporary workers, but voluntary redundancy will be offered to permanent staff.

In a company statement a spokesman said: "We regret this action is necessary, however, it is ultimately in the long-term interests of our business."

Peterborough City Council leader John Peach said many of the posts that will be axed are not presently filled.
